Bedford Barn.

Concept design for spectacular barn conversion in rural Herefordshire.

Completed: In construction, early 2026 Size: 4,000 sqft.

Bedford Barn was an incredible opportunity to work with a local construction business owner on a personal passion project. With planning permission approved for the conversion of a historical ‘Dutch Barn’ and it’s adjoining space, the clients approached Rickards Design for ideas to bring the interiors to life for their new home.

Working closely alongside both the architects (RRA) and the clients, the conceptual vision was clearly identified early; an industrial and sleek finish with warm natural undertones throughout. Taking inspiration from the surrounding beautiful Herefordshire countryside, the concept and design choices intend to complement, and not overly distract from, the incredible views through the large picture windows planned across the property.

Central focus was given to the main open plan kitchen and dining area, which is visible as you enter the property through stunning crittal glazed entrance. The space is designed to be functional, sociable and practical for the whole family to use. Being a transitional space, ensuring the area is easy to keep tidy is key through hidden equipment and using consistent finishes to cleverly disguise openings and a hidden entrance to the pantry.

The dining area acts as the central point between the upper lounge, cosy TV room and stairwell to the first floor. Celebrated by the feature fireplace wall and further glazed doorways, giving a focal point to the entire ground floor. Two generous en-suite bedrooms are also on the ground floor, alongside a WC, boot room and laundry space.

The upstairs of the property has a showcase curved ceiling throughout, creating a feature in itself within each room. The landing leads to the master and secondary en-suite bedrooms, with thoughtful joinery solutions for storage and dressing across the space.
